Krampus & Nikolaus Day

At the beginning of December, when darkness falls over the mountains, South Tyrol comes alive with sound, energy – and a touch of magic. It’s the time everyone waits for: Saint Nicholas is coming! And with him arrive his fearsome companions, the Krampuses.

On December 5th, Krampus Day, villages across the region turn into eerie, enchanting stages. Fur-clad figures with massive horns, rattling chains and glowing eyes march through the streets. During the legendary Krampus runs, there’s dancing, shouting and plenty of noise – an ancient tradition once meant to drive away the dark spirits of winter.

A day later, on December 6th, the mood softens. Saint Nicholas visits families, praises the good children and hands out small gifts – a moment of warmth and kindness in the heart of Advent.

Even in the villages of Südtirols Süden, this age-old custom is kept very much alive. Between charming wine villages, festive squares and cozy Christmas markets, the air is filled with mystery, tradition and holiday spirit.
