St. Peter by the Hill

To the west of the village center lies the historically significant hill of Peterbühl. This is where the beginnings of Völs am Schlern and the entire Schlern region can be found. People settled here thousands of years before Christ. Today, a theme trail commemorates these long-past times and the exciting excavation sites around the small chapel on the Peterbühl. The chapel rises directly on the crest of the hill and stands out with its 13th-century tower. Above the doors, you can see the crossed keys of St. Peter and next to them the coats of arms of the Thun and Firmian families. The coats of arms belong to Regina von Thun and Katharina von Firmian, the two wives of Leonhard the Elder von Völs. The Renaissance-style paintings date back to around 1600. The 16th-century winged altarpiece is now on display in the Völs Parish Museum.

The Peterbühl is an ideal destination for a leisurely stroll or for those seeking a place of peace and reflection. Several benches offer a relaxed atmosphere and invite you to linger.

By car:
In Völs am Schlern at the central traffic circle on the main road, turn in the direction of Dorfstraße (historic village center), there are several places where you can park - see section Parking.

Then continue on foot, as the church is not accessible by car.
Follow the village road to the second traffic circle, take the first exit to the right and after a few meters you will find a large park with a green area and a pond - follow the walking path by the park to get to Peterbühl. After passing a wooden barrier you can keep to the right to do the Peterbühl circular walk, once you see the big statues you can turn left to get to the hill where the Peterbühl church is located with some seating points and a nice view.

All over Völs am Schlern you can park up to 1h free, also near the church. Up to 3h you can park in the underground car park of Völs am Schlern in the Dorfstraße. Otherwise, there is a paid parking zone at the Bezugsgenossenschaft in Stegerweg 1.

Peterbühl is easy to reach by public transport.
To get to Peterbühl, get off at the bus stop ‘Völs Kreisverkehr’. The following buses will take you there:

Line no. 170 Brixen-Kastelruth-Seis-Völs-Bozen
Line no. 2 Seis-Völs

Peterbühl is of particular prehistoric importance. This was the site of the first settlement and thus the beginnings of Fiè and the entire Sciliar region.
